Spinal fractures can occur as a result of traumas or spontaneously in the elderly patients when standing up due to thinning of bones (osteoporosis). Simple osteoporotic fractures in the elderly patients can be treated by inserting a needle into the spine and injecting a material called acrylic (bone cement) without general anesthesia (it can be certainly done in appropriate fractures, not all fractures are suitable for this technique). The patient can get up and walk immediately after the procedure. The procedure is done under local anesthesia.
